Master of Organzing

Today was a pretty ordinary day, except I've become a master of sorting through colored pins. We use pins a lot for marking different butterflies and keeping the strings their cocoons hang on in place. We have boxes to organize them, but it's easier to just throw them in a cup and organize them later. Or, in this case, have the all-to-willing intern do it. I told the lady I work with (Lauren) I like to organize things and I have a feeling that's exactly what I'll be doing a lot more often.
Because a lot of organizing allows for conversation, we talked a lot. The most interesting subject for me was all the non-profit organizations Lauren helps out with. There was one that had an event she helped with recently where they take girls from low-income areas and women who work in science, technology, and mathematics fields. It's a chance for girls to have role models in areas of work they may not have considered otherwise.
Another thing she helped work on was a Kenyan forest. There were a lot of poachers working in the area, upsetting the people protecting the animals, and there were a lot of farmers who wanted to cut down the forest so they could farm more. The organization went in a helped teach them how to farm butterflies, which isn't too difficult and helps conserve the forest and wildlife. They built a wall around the forest, protecting the other wildlife, and now they can make a lot of money shipping cocoons to exhibits and museums. They even started repopulating the native butterfly species.
Hearing that things as cool as this are possible and happening is so exciting for me and I really want to help with them in the future (or maybe now).
