My internship was incredibly fun today- there was a kitten in the entomologists’ office! One of the most fascinating things I’ve noticed in my time at my internship is the amount of wild animals and creatures that stay close to the museum and are in the exhibits. From the moment I walk up to the front doors, there are always little brown and green anoles and geckos scampering around. There’s also lots of birds over-head, and in the bushes. Then of course inside the museum we have our butterflies, fish, other bugs, iguanas, and one snake. Sometimes there are even other animals around the museum, and today there was a kitten. The minute I walked into our office I noticed a blue jacket containing one of the cutest kittens I’ve seen sitting on the lap of our botanist. The cat was so little and his eye was a little hurt, but he was so happy to be in the office. I even got to hold him- I almost died from the cuteness.
Besides all the hub-bub of the kitty, it was a pretty chill day. Lauren joked that she had an actual task for me as I seem to be organizing the colored pins pretty often. I was instructed to go through the exhibit with a grocery bag and collect all the strung together, red, play-balls that are sprayed with nectar for the butterflies. I think it had been a while since they last changed them out and all the nectar and butterflies could make them sort of gross.
After I collected them all, I was instructed to throw them away and create new ones. It was fairly simple and basically sewing. I had to string together five, red play-balls together using a needle and fishing wire, and make sure to tie the string in a way that we could hang them up. It didn’t take too long and I got them all hung up back in the exhibit. It was an interesting experience to get to make something that will now be in the exhibit for a good six months, and I got to be with the kitten the whole time I was working.
